Mary asks…

I need a Video Introduction for business web videos?

Our company is making a lot of instructional/sales videos for our websites. We need about a three second intro to our videos that shows our brand/logo and shows how GREAT we are.

My question is: WHO DOES THIS? What are they called? I can’t seem to search for the correct thing. OR do you know of an awesome company you would recommend?

Brenton Parker answers:

Do you mean you want to add a three seconds intro video clip to your long video? If so, I know a tool can do this, it’s Moyea Web Player Pro – http://www.flash-video-mx.com/web-player-pro/ This tool allow you add advertisement in .swf, .flv format and image to your video.

David asks…

Is starting a SiteBuilder Web-Business a good idea?

Hi all,

I am starting a hosting business that hides the user from the complexities of setting up the website backend and only providing a dedicated website builder only (based on swsoft sitebuilder)

services to include:
- domain and email setup for the user
- easy to use website builder
- full support of email and builder products
- targeted towards small/medium business that are not computer savvy
- website fully hosted

My question is, will a business like this likely generate sales enough to make the business profitable? Is the market way too saturated with businesses homestead, moonfruit, citymax, web hosters providing sitebuilders, and web designers?

Also, are there any additional services I can provide to bring in more revenue apart from custom webdesign, or banner/logo editing?

SR5k!

Brenton Parker answers:

I teach a lot of small business classes and always recommend online builders to the non-technical among my students. It’s true that many have difficulty even using the simplest tools. So if you could develop a very straight-forward builder, with fairly high functionality, you may have a winner. I think the space is still evolving. Presently, I’m using SquareSpace for my blockbeta.com website. I was using Dreamweaver, but since I’m more of a marketer than a developer, I’m enjoying focusing on creating content, rather than the backend. It’s one of the best I’ve seen so far, but it still requires at least a little bit of technical knowledge. You could offer a decent tool (or license one), then offer technical and maintenance assistance as a value-add.

Jenny asks…

CAN ANYONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS WEB BUSINESS:homerevenuesystem.com?

Hello Fellow Yahoo Members:

I just listen to a lengthy sales pitch from a gent by the name of Brian Bailey. It appears that he is the founder/creator of this work from home web business: homerevenuesystem.com

I would love to hear from those who have experience with this individual and his business. Is it legit? He is offering a 365 days money back guarantee for those who do not make money with his system.

This appears to be affiliate marketing, because he showed a clickbank earnings report. The one time cost for joining is $97, but if one try to leave the main web page, one is prompt and can get the one time cost drop to $49.99. Please, I would love to get some feed back on this. Thanks

Brenton Parker answers:

Yes. The site is another one of the thousands that tease you with lots of promises. You will be selling Clickbank products like weight-loss and people-finder ebooks and programs.

This website was created Oct 4, 2010. Too new for you to trust him with your credit card. The site hides its ownership; always a bad sign. If you have a problem, you won’t have anyone to contact.

Avoid them.

Steven asks…

what kind of insurance will i need for my catalog sales business?

I am starting a home based catalog sales and internet business selling clothing and accessories, what kind of insurance will I need to purchase for this type of business?

Brenton Parker answers:

You should look into liability insurance for your business. Your home insurance policy likely excludes a home based business. Your home insurer might have a home based business insurance rider. But many companies do not offer home based business insurance for internet sales so you might have to look for a commercial general liability policy.

Good luck with your business!

Paul asks…

Can I declare the sale of an internet domain as a capital gain?

I recently sold the internet domain and business I had developed over a two year period. It’s arguable whether the value of what I was selling was primarily the domain name itself or whether it was the business and the small revenue stream the website was starting to generate. Can I declare the sale as a capital gain? If so, what do I call the purchase price? (the $8 registration I intially paid?). Or do I somehow add up the assets of the business which I sold? Or do I have to declare the business sale as regular income? (it was not incorporated in any way).

I need an answer for both US and Canadian taxes as I have to file in both countries.

Brenton Parker answers:

With the sale of any business, your basis in the business is determined by adding the value of the assets of the company. The sales price less your basis would then constitute your gain on the sale of the business. If you have owned the business for more than a year, then it will be considered a long term capital gain. This applies for the US, and I assume that it would also apply to Canada as well.

Mark asks…

Register the business and get sales/resellers licence for starting a home based internet business?

Hello,

I am interested in starting my own home based internet business selling phone accessories on a professionally designed website.

However, I am curious if I would need to register my business and get myself a sales licence/resellers permit.

Can someone enlighten me?

Thanks in advance! (:

Brenton Parker answers:

Yes, you will have some ‘hoops’ to jump through to be recognized as a business operating legally and of course the government has to keep track of your income, which they do by assigning you a EIN number.

Assuming you are in the U.S., here is a link to a page at the Small Business Administration that contains, by state, links to advise you of the licensing requirements according to your location.

Hope that helps.

Michael asks…

Cany anyone assist me..I need help writing a slogan for my internet business?

I am trying to improve my sales on the internet and would like to add a catchy phrase to my business. I sell rodeo equipment, horse tack, and can make practically anything in regards to horse related items and have a good track record for creating quality products, in a short amount of time. Help? my brain is fried and need assistance in creating such a slogan. Any ideas would help, Thanks.

Brenton Parker answers:

“Need best quality horse’s stuff at an affordable price? Get it from us–straight from the horse’s mouth!” :-) or “Horses can tell. We sell best quality stuff.”

I don’t know if it makes sense. I’m also running out of idea.. But I’m sure, this will contribute to your idea in formulating your advertising phrase. The more unusual your phrase is, the more catchy. Just consider the relevance added with a pinch of foolishness. That’s how advertising works.

John asks…

Does having a pt home business prevent short-term dis benefits?

I have a full time job but am contemplating going on short-term medical disability for a few weeks. I have a part time internet sales business that I do report to the IRS. Since the home business is ‘income’ would it void me from the disability payments?

Brenton Parker answers:

Yes, you do have to report all sources of income. As well, if you claim disability, you have to establish why you are medically unfit to do your work duties but are capable of working your home business. Good luck!

James asks…

Is a Business License required for an internet business or a business having a garage sale?

Brenton Parker answers:

If you don’t have a brick and mortar store (a physical store in other words) and are operating out of your house, you usually need a mobile sellers permit.

But if all you’re doing is having garage or rummage sales, none is needed.

David asks…

What would you do if you had $10,000 and wanted to start an internet business. What &where would you sell?

I am wanting to build a retail sales business on the internet. I have been selling corporate liquidation items on ebay and am a power seller($1000+) every month for several. It is a good business but it is too high of maintenance. I want to sell something small and manageable. Ebay or Website or both.

Brenton Parker answers:

It sounds like you are a good entrepreneur. Excellent. But the ideas need to come from you. Ive been setting people up on internet for as long as its been called internet. You can sell anything you want on commission thru the tons of affiliate programs available.

But such sites make it or fail based on the attention of the owner. Pick a subject, choose affiliate items, get a free website, make a webpage, get it on search engines, make money. Any subject. It can be an item, hobby, games, craft, sport, pet, country, any subject at all. I dont care if its strange flowerpots or the latest in dieting. It can be something you know a lot about or it can be something you WANT to know a lot about. Is there something that you bug your friends because when you get on the topic you talk about it way too much?

Lets say that its golf. You setup a web page then you search for affiliations on the topic of golf. You can offer golf equipment, training videos, books, funny tshirts with golf sayings on them, etc etc.

Then you need to get attention to your site. You can try out and write reviews on everything you offer on your site. You can link to news and how-to articles about golf. You can add a discussion forum about golf, you can do a newsletter that people sign up for which covers hot golf news items (and mentions new items in your shop). Do you begin to see why it needs to be something you love?

A couple of strong affiliate programs are Amazon.com and CafePress.com, or you can go to CommissionJunction to shop thru their affiliates. These work because the companies know that a “golf” site is better for selling “golf” items. Check those out and think “can I pitch this better than they are pitching it”.

Whatever subject you pick, you can make it THE site to go to for information on that subject. Those are the sites that work. The ones that the person is in love with. When you get a subject, come back and ask how you can build a site around it.

Charles asks…

Internet Business. Sales Tax?

I own a website that sells art prints. I live in Texas. Do I have to charge taxes to all my customers at my rate. Or do i only charge the customers tax that live in texas? Please help im super confused.
I also sell art for people. So say my artist is in belgum, i arrange the sale and take a commision, do i charge tax? SO CONFUSED

Brenton Parker answers:

Only in Texas do you charge sales tax. If you have a location in another state, you would need to charge for that state, too.

Sharon asks…

How can I generate sales for my internet business?

I create handmade t-shirts for children. Patterns include, Christmas prints and a variety of prints for customers to choose from.

Brenton Parker answers:

By finding more people who are interested in your products and/or services and making your prices more affordable.

Cheers!

William asks…

Do I have to charge sales tax for an internet business in Washington state, USA?

I am thinking of relocating the internet business and wondering if I am legally required to collect the tax or not.

Brenton Parker answers:

You are required to collect sales tax in states that you have nexus. Since you reside in Washington, you will only need to collect sales tax for items shipped to Washington. Any goods shipped out of the state will not be taxed. Instead, the purchaser will have to pay use tax, which most people never will.

BTW, don’t forget you have to pay B&O (business & occupation) tax in Washington.

Donald asks…

where can i find the free web site that post my business for sale?

Brenton Parker answers:

I do free postings on purplepages.com, yahoo business group (if there isn’t a local one, start it yourself), and on craigslist in my state. I also post free stuff on the Yahoo Freecycle group and in the signature lines, I am allowed to post my business name, website address, and my name. So it’s another form of free advertising, not everyone will link to it, but if you get one person out of a group of 1000, everytime you post something that goes to your website and buys, then it’s worth it.

Sandra asks…

Should I sell my web business?

I started a unique online web directory that is growing. It has a lot of profit potential for someone with the right marketing capital. I also have a few sales reps working for me to sell listings. It is in a fast-growing market. I just don’t have the time or capital to keep it going right now. Should I sell?

Brenton Parker answers:

Yes, just market it right, someone might come up with something just as unique and useful.

Unless you can find someone to back you

Mandy asks…

Do at-home Web businesses need to register with the city? Fill out sales tax forms for federal or state level?

We’re starting a Web business from the home but don’t know what paperwork needs to be filled out. I couldn’t find any good Web resources.

Brenton Parker answers:

Go to your state’s dept. Of revenue website. They should have a section called “Starting a Business in……”

Generally, online businesses are subject to the same tax rules as a brick and mortar business.

Also, check with an accountant in your area.

Sandy asks…

Does anyone know of a web site to search for business premises for sale?

Brenton Parker answers:

Try bargain pages website.

Joseph asks…

is it normal for your web based business to be open 2 1/2 months and no sales?

I opened my website 2 1/2 months ago… I’ve started a google adwords campaign, site map, and a blog even have participated in link swaping. My site traffic has been increasing but no sales? is this normal? what should I be doing differently?

Brenton Parker answers:

2 things – you may want some people to review your site and see if it is providing the information and services in a clear and concise manner. Websites have to be catchy. Send the site address to friends or family to review. Does it show up at the top of the lists when searched for on the net?

A web based business should generate sales quickly.

Your Questions About Online Business For Sale

Michael asks…

If you have an online business offering a service to others…?

I am regsitering my business for taxes. Which one would I be expected to owe if any, for just selling a service online?

Sales Tax
Use Tax
Income Tax Withholding
Single Business Tax

or none of the above. Thanks.

Brenton Parker answers:

Assuming that you will still be filing a individual income tax return the profit or loss from your business activity will be calculated on a Schedule C. That amount will be reported on Line 12 of your Form1040. Within the Schedule C there may be some taxes that you will have paid and they will be used to offset your income. If your profit exceeds $400 you will be subject to Self Employment tax which is 15.3% of your net profit however your will be allowed to adjust your total income by one half of the SE tax on line 27 of the Form 1040. If you believe that you will have a sizable profit from this venture you should make estimated tax payment each quarter. Those estimates are on the anticipated income tax liability at the end of the year. As this will be a new business you may need to make adjustments in those estimates each quarter. If you have never had a business before you should consult a tax professional before you start and they can review all of this stuff in greater detail.

David asks…

What steps do I need to take to register my online business so that I can get business checking?

I need a separate account all together for my online sales. I want to do what I can to register w/the irs and state to get a bank account (and also just to be safe so I don’t get in trouble).

I know I need the EIN, but what else do I need to do this?

Brenton Parker answers:

The best thing to do is really go to the bank in which you would like to open an account to ask them what they require.

The bank will almost certainly want an EIN, which you indicate you will get. They will frequently also want a copy of your business license. You will need to get a business license from either the county or city you reside in. Call the city and/or county treasurer’s office to find out which is applicable to you.

If you are using a fictitious business name (a name other than your actual name or the actual name of a corporation, for example), you will need to register that name. In California, this is done at the County Recorder’s office. Give your recorder’s office a call to see if a filing is required. Again, this is a document that a bank will probably want if you want to open the bank account in the name of the business.

Finally, if you have formed a separate business entity such as a corporation or partnership, the bank will probably want copies of the formation documents (Articles of Incorporation or Partnership Agreement, for example.)

Good luck.

Sharon asks…

What should I do for my online business?

If I sell online and all over the country, does it matter where I incorporate? Or is their some special incorporation I can do for online sales?

Brenton Parker answers:

There are no special incorporation rules for companies that sell online.

Some states give serious tax breaks to corporations, most predominately Delaware and Nevada. But – you better get some tax advice from a CPA in your state, as your state’s taxing agency may have rules regrading that state’s residents incorporating out-of-state while physically present in their state, possibly for the purpose of avoiding their state taxes.
