John asks…

College money question?

Okay so I am a junior in high school and I have been thinking A LOT about college in the past couple of weeks and I feel completely clueless about everything. Is this normal? I mean I didn’t even know what a prerequisite was until I Googled it the other day. Any way my major question is how to make money in college. I am going away to college and have already started my planning but one big thing has been on my mind; how am I supposed to make money while I’m there. I know must of you are going to say “Find a job” but if the economy does not improve by fall of 2011 then I might be out of luck in that category. I’m scared that if I do not have money I will fail because 1) I might not have money for food and starve. 2) I might not be able to afford my supplies for class. 3) I would definitely need money for any extra things that i want to do. Also I am a daughter of a single mom so I couldn’t just ask my mom for money when ever I need it.

Brenton Parker answers:

There are A LOT of employment opportunities at Universities w/in the system. In addition most college towns have a lot of local restaurant type businesses that are constantly hiring. Something else you might want to consider: put off college until you are 23–why? B/c you are considered to be an “independent” once you are 23, which means that your mother’s income does not have to be considered in determining the amount of financial aid you are eligible for & in which case the college will find money most if not all of your expenses through loans & federal + state grants, and when I say expenses I mean “cost of living.” They determine how much money it is going to cost you to eat, for housing, clothing, textbooks, lab fees, travel, computer expenses, etc, etc, that are in addition to your tuition. #2 stop stressing. You are only a junior. Schedule an appointment w/ your hs guidance counselor who has all the answers to your questions.
I highly recommend waiting until age 23 to go to school–by then you have some life experience and an idea of what you want to do, you are focused on school b/c you have taken a break from school since high school, and you have had a lot of time to get a job and work, so if you can find one at a place like walmart, publix, or even at the mall, there is a good chance that you will be able to just transfer to a new location & you wouldn’t even have to worry about this. Plus if you don’t go to college right out of hs, you have the chance to party w/out fing up your grades & therefore your life in college.

Mary asks…

Make some serious $$$ from the incoming Democratic administration?

OK. You can currently buy crude oil futures contracts expiring in January 2010 for $71.92. Since, by then, the new Democratic administration will have exposed the Republican-backed scheme allowing oil companies to prop up their own futures prices, oil will be trading at about $20/barrel again. So buy the put options and pocket $50 bucks per contract! I swear, if I had any extra money I’d do it (though I might buy the 2011 or 2012 contracts. Us Dems ain’t that smart you know. Might take the new administration a few years to figure out the obvious).
You know people, either I’m right or I’m wrong. But I am aware of all the factors that drive oil prices, and I am aware that the current price spike, which began in earnest in 2002, appeared from no where and will fade to no where. Statistically, it can easily be argued that it (the spike) is a pure artifact of human manipulation of the futures markets. Whenever any scam is going on, there are always all kinds of ignorant analysts and apologists who want to sound smart by talking up the excuses. Anyone remember the NEW economy of the dotcom era? Anyone remember how the NEW economy was replacing the anachronistic economics laws of the OLD economy? Anyone remember all that bull? The excuses for the surrent spike in oil prices are pure bull as well. It’s all simple manipulation of the futures markets. Exxon/Mobil has enough money to do it and so does the US government. Which is responsible? I don’t know. Probably both…

Brenton Parker answers:

OMG buy thru another Clinton and wait for Jeb Bush in 2013? As if we will have a planet left anyway.
If Americans only knew the amount of geo thermal resources and even oil we have here it would shock you. Much in the slate like in Utah and the oil ? In them Arkansas hills where Bubba was trying to build.
I loved the commentary. Thanks. I feel if we depend on foreign fuel we can only except the losses.

Mandy asks…

Do I need to file business taxes for 2010?

I applied for and received my EIN the last week of December 2010 but did not receive any business income or receive any services in 2010. I spent about $100 on items related to the business. I am a single mom, full time college student, part time employee making and selling bows and a few other girly items for extra money. 2011 is a whole different story, but I don’t think I have to figure that out until next year, lol.

Since there was no income for 2010, am I required to file business taxes or would my “business” still be considered a hobby? It seems like an awful lot of paperwork if I can just do the the individual tax return.

Not sure if it matters, but I’m in the state of Louisiana.

Thanks!

Brenton Parker answers:

If this is just a sole proprietorship or single member LLC nothing is required to be filed (which is my guess based on the info in your post). If this is a corporation with a start date in 2010 yes.

Donald asks…

Does the 2011 mustang gt 5.0 premium model come with a gps/screen thing?

if it doesn’t, how do i MAKE it come with one? i dont want to buy a gt500 just for a gps system….
does the dealership add it in optionally for some extra money? or do i have to go elsewhere?

Brenton Parker answers:

It’s a factory option. It’s part of the $2340 Electronics Package. The GT Premium doesn’t come with it as standard equipment. But it’s optional and you can either order one with it, or you can look around your dealer’s lot and you’ll probably find one with Nav on the lot.

It’s not a dealer-installed part. It’s factory installed only.

Ken asks…

Marines Voluntary recall?

I was in the Marines for 4 years. While i was in i got a year of college done. Since i EAS’d i will complete my second year soon. After this semester im taking 2 summer courses to finish my AA. However the school i need to transfer to doesnt accept spring (2011) transfers, and it its too late to be a fall 2010 transfer. My question is can i volunteer to be recalled for a year? i can apply for the fall of 2011, and if i am still completing my recall time i can take classes online because my transfer will be complete, then i can resume going to class every day in the spring of 2012. im not sure if this is possible, but it seems like a productive way to spend a year. get recalled deploy, make some extra money, but is it possible?

Brenton Parker answers:

Check with IRR and see if they have some billets open with your MOS for the period of time youre looking for.

Lizzie asks…

What’s a good online website to work from home and make some extra money?

I am looking to make some extra money working from home. If you are working from home and really making extra money please let me know. Thanks

Brenton Parker answers:

One of my friends got an on line shop from home but he got sick of being alone at home. Soon he got room in his friends office for doing his own shop and began commuting.

Chris asks…

What are some good ways to make extra money from home?

I already have a full time job and my schedule is pretty erratic, which makes it difficult to find a second one. I am not interested in changing jobs at the moment. I am trying to get ahead and go back to school and would like to hear about ways of supplementing an income that can be done online or from home. Please make recommendations only if you have had a good experience. Thanks!

Brenton Parker answers:

Here’s a response from OldBuddy:

I’m sure they’re not the only ones either, just the most popular. If you think about what they do it should be obvious to anyone who takes part in the rip off.

Oh I’m not saying they cheat the people who join, of course they wouldn’t do that! The scam is perpetrated against the poor advertiser that is offering a nice bonus for people to try their product or service. These are honest businessmen and women who are just trying to make an honest buck and are willing to give in order to receive.

So along comes CashCrate and TreasureTrooper to exploit them, just like Fagin in Oliver Twist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_Twist ). Instead of picking up street orphans to train as pickpockets, they find Internet Surfers and train them instead. They teach them to sign up for theses offers and just before they have to pay, cancel everything and bring the money back to CashCrate and TreasureTrooper so you can keep a share.

Who do you think is making all the MONEY???? Just like Fagin, they have everyone scrambling to get a piece of the ill gotten gains.

Good luck!

Linda asks…

What’s the best way to make extra money from home? I’m not expecting millions, maybe an extra 100 per month.

I’m not looking for get-rich quick ideas, maybe something simple or over the internet. I’m looking at spending 2-3 hours per week from home. I am employed full-time, but some extra “pocket money” is what I’m hoping to gain.

Thanks…

If you like yahoo!answers, there is another site similar to it that pays you a little to post. It isn’t going to pay your rent, but you can make about $30 a month on it if you post and respond for an hour or two each day. It’s fun, like yahoo!answers, and there are lots of forums. Plus, you get to design a profile sort of like myspace. You get paid for quality posts, adding pictures, and referrals. Check it out:

Michael asks…

Is there any legitimate online sites to make extra money via surveys, or reading emails?

i would like to know if anyone has any sites or information on making extra money online whether it be reading emails, surveys and it doesnt cost anything to join. i have spare time and i figured it wouldnt hurt to link up with a legitimate company who actually pays. any ideas or sites !!!

Brenton Parker answers:

There are several survey sites that are legit, your not going to get rich doing them though. Do not give anyone your SSN there are lots of sites out there that are legit and they do not need this info from you. Nor do you have to pay to join. I am a member of several. The one I have had the most luck with is Lightspeed. They do not pay you cash you get points which can be converted into cash via pay pal. However, they send me the most surveys. And already twice now I have been asked to participate in a more extensive survey in which I was sent a palm pilot in the mail and asked to record certain daily activities. The ones I have completed offered a $50 incentive and that was in the form of a check in addition to the points I received for completing the initial survey. I have also done survey savy which has a great referral program if you know people who will join you get money for surveys they complete. I have also tried American Consumer Opinion. They pay by check in mail for all surveys, but I have not been able to complete many of their surveys. Pinecone is also great. You have to have an invitation to join though. Right now they are looking for males over 18. Email me if you want the invitation. They send one or two surveys a month. They are great though cause you will have a few days or a week to answer the survey if you don’t check your email religiously. Then they send a check in the mail pronto.

Most pay a few dollars per survey completed so it is best to use several. You also need to be a regular email checker because if you don’t respond to the survey fast enough they have met their quota.

If you would like to give me a referral credit use the link in my profile for survey savvy and the other sites are listed there as well. Good Luck!

Yeah… umm… I DO work. I need EXTRA cash to earn on off hours. Did you read the whole question? Besides I live in a city with one of the highest unemployment rates in the country… THERE ARE NO JOBS. I’m lucky to have one, let alone two.

Brenton Parker answers:

Try this website, its a tournament where you can gamble your luck to make a lot of money and I mean real money. The good news is that you don’t have to use any money to pay are sign up because they give you a penny where you can double it each time you win. You actually have a better chance of winning than playing the lotto about a million dollars if you have the brains and luck to. Why are they going to give you money? That’s because they are already making tons of money from you by making you watching there advertisement that other sites pay them to, just like you tube for example, especially before playing a game. This is not a scam site because at first i thought it was until i search the internet and even came on here to see if there are anything that people are talking about the site so I have already did my homework. Also by you clicking my referral link I should make some buck are two. And you can do the same if you refer some more people about the site. This is my referral link where you can go to the website @

I need quick money for fuel etc to get to my new job just until pay day. I hate borrowing off anyone so i need a way i can make extra money fast!! Like a place you can sell unused items or a job idea that will work quick!!

Brenton Parker answers:

Make Money with Direct Sales

Direct sales is another good way to make money working part time from home.

With direct sales, you sell products for another company. Avon is probably the name most associated with direct sales, but you can find companies offering all sorts of products you can sell, including clothes, candles, scrapbooking kits, food, electronics, and much more.

Some people make plenty of money with direct sales just by selling their products to friends, family members, and co-workers.

Your Questions About Make Extra Money 2011

Betty asks…

Is underbody protection worth the extra money on a Jeep?

I purchased a new 2011 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, and of course I know that the dealership just wanted to try and make more money off me, but I am kind of concerned about the underbody of my vehicle. I would like to go off roading at some point and I live in a heavily salted area during the winter months. But is the additional $1500 for “The Protector” treatment really worth the money? Any suggestions on the best way to maintain the body of a Jeep, or someone with advice who’s had one for many years who drives in similar conditions?

Brenton Parker answers:

No, even for full body protection it is to much.
If you scratch any part of the under body the protection will be the first to come off.
I have a 89 fsj with it and it still has rust mainly because the previous owner didn’t clean the mud from it.
If the car is well cleaned after an off road run and the mud isn’t left to sit and hold moisture to the chassis then it should last.
$1500 for something that takes them 15 min to spray on?
Not this little black duck!

Steven asks…

what should the Milwaukee Bucks do during the 2011 off season to get better?

Will the bucks resign michael redd or should they use the extra money to sign some real good players that can help them make the playoffs again ? What players should they get in the 2011 nba draft?

Brenton Parker answers:

Rebuild through the draft, make some little but key offseason signs.

Richard asks…

Torn between studying abroad and having extra money to pay for our wedding?

Our estimated wedding months (we still haven’t pinpointed an exact date) are either May or June 2011. I’ll have just graduated from college. Just recently I was gtiven the chance to participate in a study abroad program for 3 weeks in May/June 2010. The study abroad program costs nearly $4,000. My parents would only be able to pay for a small amount so I’d have to foot the rest of the bill on my own. This program is directly in line with what I want to do with my major – museum work. The program is in London England (also my dream location for work.)

If I did decide to go, it would take a big chunk out of our wedding budget. I feel guilty because we’d have to cut back on some of things that we both wanted (alcohol and a nice honeymoon for example) and our guest list would have to be cut back. I would still have a year to save up for the wedding, but between going to school fulltime and paying off the trip I wouldn’t have a lot of money to save for the wedding.

I’m so confused. I don’t want to miss out on this trip and regret it for the rest of my life… but then again I don’t want to make our wedding less than wonderful for my future husband and I.

Any advice? I haven’t brought this up to him yet because I’m not sure how to approach it. I’m sure he’d be happy for me because he knows that England is my dream vacation. I just feel bad because it’s not something he can enjoy as well.
I didn’t mean to say “dream vacation”. This really wouldn’t be a vacation – I’d be earning 6 hours of college credit as well as getting my foot into possible internships. We have seminars to go everyday (like normal class) and exams at the end.
I have about $7,000 or so right now saved up for our wedding. This is my money that I’ve been saving, so it’s not in a joint account. The $7,000 includes the estimated cost of a honeymoon. I know it’s not much but we’re both in school full-time and he’s the only one that also has a full-time job.
The $4,000 includes airfare (I live in the US), hotel stay, admission to museums/historical sites, tuition, etc. I believe the only things not included are text books and then food costs.

Brenton Parker answers:

I would go study abroad. Like you said you may never have that opportunity again! You’ve saved up $7000 yourself, you should be able to count on your fiance to help save up for the wedding as well. You still have almost 2yrs until the actual wedding! Think about the bridal shower, a lot of people end up giving money, so you could count on some extra cash towards the wedding but not a lot.

Laura asks…

I started college this term (spring 2011), would the 2011-2012 school year make me a (continued below)?

second year student when applying for a federal student loan? Because it says I can ask for more money on my loan in my second year vs. my first year. I am so confused because I have only done the one term, I don’t feel like I would be a second year student. But I guess it maybe is a matter of it being a second school year?

extra info (the new 2011-2012 school year starts in Summer term)

Brenton Parker answers:

I don’t know if the criteria is the same in all colleges and universities, but I got my degree with federal student loans. Since these are federal funds, it would seem like it would be the same everywhere.
How they determined years was actually by hours. So if you have the hours to fit into a second year, then it wouldn’t matter about what we counted as time in high school (freshman…). It would go by the subject hours. Good luck

Chris asks…

Please help. Any ideas welcome.?

I’m 26 and work full-time at a local preschool. My beloved is 24 and has lost his job. We are bot students at Rasmussen College. I’m studying early childhood development and my beloved is studying accounting. Our plan was to get married in May of 2011 so that we could save up for our wedding. With my beloved out of work and my job paying very little we are no longer able to save for our wedding. Dose anybody one have ideas on ways we could make extra money so that we can continue to save as my beloved looks for work? One of my friends suggested selling baked good as a sort of fundraiser for our wedding. Is this even appropriate? Please help. I do not wish to push our wedding date back any farther.
We had very little saved before my beloved lost his job and have already cut $6,000 from our original budget.
We also cut our guest list nearly in half.

Brenton Parker answers:

You could do a fund raiser as long as you do it the right way, and dont lie that you are raising money for sick kids or something, i’ve seen that before and it’s a horrible lie.

Your wedding is over a year away, you have time for your “beloved” to get another job, and for the the two of you to save up. If you can’t afford the wedding, don’t get married!
